What is BS EN 12377 - Flexible packaging tubes about?

Airtightness of closures for flexible tubes is very important in maintaining the quality and integrity of the product. The tubes have to be airtight to prevent gases from entering. The presence of oxygen increases the microbial activity of aerobic microbes hence the deterioration of the quality of the products. Some ingredients of the products also react with gases in the air resulting in the undesired characteristics and therefore leading to spoilage and shortening of the life span.

BS EN 12377 specifies a test method for airtightness of the closures for flexible tubes. BS EN 12377 includes precision on how to conduct the test following the immersion of the tube in water.

BS EN 12377 is applicable to flexible single-layer metal or plastics tubes and multilayer or laminated tubes used for packing pharmaceutical, cosmetic, hygiene, food and other domestic and industrial products.

Who is BS EN 12377 - Flexible packaging tubes for?

BS EN 12377 on flexible packaging tubes is useful for:

  • Goods packaging products manufacturers
  • The goods packaging and distribution industry
  • Food packaging companies
  • Quality control personnel
  • Inspection bodies
  • Safety bodies for packaging machines

Why should you use BS EN 12377 - Flexible packaging tubes

Efficient packaging is of great importance for the distribution and the protection of goods. Insufficient or inappropriate packaging can lead to damage or wastage of the contents of the pack. The barrier performance of packaging is one of the important testing indicators for flexible tube packaging.

BS EN 12377 provides you with a test procedure which ensure the airtightness of closures. The principle of BS EN 12377 is the detection of air bubbles escaping from the tube cap when the tube is held underwater and subjected to an internal air pressure of 0,25 bar.

BS EN 12377 is useful to manufacturers of pharmaceutical, cosmetic, hygiene, food and other domestic and industrial products in checking the quality of the flexible tubes. Following BS EN 12377 guidelines, help you to ensure the integrity and quality of packaging tubes with airtightness testing of closure for the tube.

What’s changed since the last update?

BS EN 12377:2014 supersedes BS EN 12377:1999, which is withdrawn. BS EN 12377:2014 has some technical changes with respect to BS EN 12377:1999. These include:

  • Precision is given on how to conduct the test following the immersion of the tube in water has been included
  • The note is also added related to the low-viscosity products
