What is BS EN IEC 61897 about?
BS EN IEC 61897 discusses about aeolian vibration dampers for overhead lines which enables prevention of conduction fatigue due to wind vibration. BS EN IEC 61897 applies to eolian vibration dampers intended for single conductors or earth wires or conductor bundles where dampers are directly attached to each sub conductor.
BS EN IEC 61897 specifies the requirements for cables different from those mentioned above (e.g., optical ground wires (OPGW), all dielectric self-supporting optical cables (ADSS)).
Throughout BS EN IEC 61897, the word “conductor” is used when the test applies to dampers for conductors or earth wires.
Who is BS EN IEC 61897 for?
BS EN IEC 61897 on overhead lines for aeolian vibration dampers is applicable in:
- Manufacturers of aeolian vibration dampers
- Companies dealing with overhead electric wire lines
- Retailers and suppliers of aeolian vibration dampers
Why should you use BS EN IEC 61897?
Aeolian vibration damper is a device comprising a steel cable with a weight at each end and one bolted clamp or a helical rod attachment, attachable to a conductor, for the purpose of damping aeolian vibration.BS EN IEC 61897 provides you guidance on protection against corrosion for aeolian vibration dampers which ensures the safe operability in different weather conditions.
BS EN IEC 61897 also provides you guidance on types which include spiral aeolian vibration damper, high temperature conductors (HTC), maximum continuous operating temperature and electrometric aeolian vibration damper which helps in classification and production of aeolian vibration dampers for appropriate applications.
As a user of BS EN IEC 61897, you can implement quality assurance, safety and performance criteria for Aeolian vibration dampers which ensures prevention of conduction fatigue.
What’s changed since the last update?
BS EN IEC 61897:2020 supersedes BS EN 61897:1999, which is withdrawn. It includes:
- Consider, in addition to Stockbridge type aeolian vibration dampers, also spiral aeolian vibration dampers and elastomeric aeolian vibration dampers
- Consider the application of dampers on high temperature conductors, specifying additional high temperature tests in clamp slip tests
- Simplify the procedure of the damper effectiveness evaluation
- Introduce test at low temperature on fastener components such as break away bolts and conical spring washers.
- Include figures showing the test arrangements for the main mechanical tests
