What is BS EN 581-1 - Safety requirements for outdoor furniture about?  

BS EN 581-1 is the first part of the BS EN 581 series of standards that focuses specifies the general safety requirements for outdoor seating and tables for camping, domestic, and contract for use by adults, without regard to materials, design/construction, or manufacturing processes. 

Note1: BS EN 581-1 does not apply to seating for spectator facilities. 

Note2: BS EN 581-1 does not include requirements for the durability of upholstery materials, castors, reclining and tilting mechanisms, and seat height adjustment mechanisms.

BS EN 581-1 on outdoor furniture applies to:

Why should you use BS EN 581-1 - Safety requirements for outdoor furniture 

In order to avoid physical injury when the outdoor furniture is in its intended position of use, all edges and corners shall be rounded, chamfered, or otherwise protected. BS EN 581-1 provides safety requirements while designing or manufacturing processes. This will ensure that the outdoor furniture produced would not cause any injury to users.  

What’s changed since the last update?   

BS EN 581-1:2017 supersedes BS EN 581-1:2006, which is withdrawn.  

In comparison with the previous edition, the following technical modifications have been made:  

  • Clarification of the definitions (camping, domestic and contract use)  
  • Test method is deleted, edges and corners are modified to take into account accessible part during use (accessible parts for seating and tables are defined) 
  • Tubular components are defined, requirements for gaps and holes removed
