What is BS EN 14879-3 Organic coatings on concrete components about? 

EN 14879 series is a European Standard that discusses organic coating systems and linings. The purpose of BS EN 14879 is to provide best industry requirements of organic coating systems and lining to ensure the components they are applied on are adequately protected from corrosion and overall deterioration.  

BS EN 14879-3 is the third part of the EN 14879 series that specifies the requirements for and methods of testing organic coatings which are applied to concrete process engineering equipment that will come in contact with aggressive chemical substances (liquids, solids and gases). The requirements specified here may be used for the purposes of quality control (e.g. as agreed between the contract partners). The different coating systems are: 

  • Impregnation, seals, thin coatings (applied by brushing, spraying or rolling) 
  • High-build coatings (applied by brushing, spraying, rolling, trowelling or pouring (self-levelling) 
  • Laminate coatings 
  • Resinous screed 
  • Mastic asphalt screed with a waterproofing layer 
  • Combinations of the above coatings 

Handling of aggressive or water pollutant materials is understood to include: 

  • Storage 
  • Filling 
  • Loading and unloading 
  • Manufacture 
  • Treatment 
  • Use 

Note: BS EN 14879-3 does not cover coatings as in EN ISO 12944-1, but it does apply to coatings that serve one or more of the following purposes: 

  • To protect the component from the damaging effects of aggressive substances 
  • To protect waters (e.g. groundwater) from harmful substances 
  • To protect the charge from becoming contaminated by components released from the substrate material 
  • To achieve a particular surface properties
