What is ISO 9211-6 about?

ISO 9211-6 is the sixth part of the multi-series that is applicable to the optics and photonics.

ISO 9211-6 discusses the properties of reflecting metal coatings and the effects they have on the optical systems. Reflecting coatings that provide near-maximum reflectance are used in all types of optical systems.

ISO 9211-6 specifies minimum requirements on the optical effects and the mechanical, chemical, and environmental properties of reflecting metal coatings.

Who is ISO 9211-6 for?

ISO 9211-6 on optical coatings is applicable to:

  • People working in the optics industry
  • Optical equipment manufacturers and suppliers
  • Photonic researchers
  • Metal coating associations

Why should you use ISO 9211-6?

ISO 9211-6 applies to reflecting metal coatings based on aluminumium or silver for optical applications. Thereby the user can rely on defined numerical data while the manufacturer of thin films has the choice for the materials and production method. Metal reflecting layers are typically deposited as a result of thermally evaporating the metal at high deposition rates and high vacuum to prevent oxidation. By adopting ISO 9211-6 the reflecting metal coatings can be used for color separation/combination in imaging, scientific, and even decorative applications. The manufacturer and the user shall agree on the solvents and chemicals for the testing of chemical durability as specified in ISO 9211-6.
