What is BS EN IEC 60793‑1‑34 about?
BS EN IEC 60793‑1‑34 discusses about Fibre Curl. BS EN IEC 60793‑1‑34 provides information about the various measurement methods and test procedures establishinguniform requirements for the mechanical characteristic: fibre curl or latent curvature in uncoated optical fibres, i.e., a specified length of the fibre has been stripped from the coating.
BS EN IEC 60793‑1‑34 gives two methods that are recognized for the measurement of fibre curl, in uncoated optical fibres:
- Method A: side view microscopy,
- Method B: laser beam scattering.
Method A uses visual or digital video methods to determine the deflection of the fibre while method B uses a line sensor to measure the maximum deflection of one laser beam relative to a reference laser beam.
Note 1: Both methods are applicable to type B optical fibres as described in IEC 60793 (all parts).
Note 2: Method A is the reference test method, used to resolve disputes.

BS EN IEC 60793‑1‑34 gives you two test methods for the measurement of fibre curl, which helps you in measuring the radius of curvature of an uncoated fibre by determining the amount of deflection, thus helping you in controlling the fibre curl.
BS EN IEC 60793‑1‑34 helps you calculate the fibre's radius of curvature from simple circular models by measuring the deflection behaviour of the fibre and by understanding the geometry of the measuring device, thus helping you in reducing the losses during the manufacturing of optical fibre, the derivation of which are given in Annex C.

BS EN IEC 60793‑1‑34:2021 supersedes BS EN 60793‑1‑34:2006, which is withdrawn. BS EN IEC 60793‑1‑34:2021 includes some technical changes with respect to <old standard number with date>. These include:
- Modification of several derivation equations for laser scattering;
- Change of angular increment from 10° to 30° to 10° to 45°;
- Change of Annex B from informative to normative.
