What is PD IEC/TR 62283-Guidance for nuclear radiation tests on optical fibres about?

PD IEC/TR 62283 is a technical report on optical fibres that provides guidance for nuclear radiation tests to ensure protection against nuclear radiation.

PD IEC/TR 62283 gives a summary of the radiation exposure in certain environments and applications and the different radiation effects on fibres.

PD IEC/TR 62283 also describes the most important radiation effect, i.e., the increase of transmission loss, and its strong dependence on a variety of fibre properties and test conditions. These dependencies need to be known to perform appropriate tests for each specific application as well as to understand, compare and qualify the test results obtained at different laboratories.

Who is PD IEC/TR 62283-Guidance for nuclear radiation tests on optical fibres for?

PD IEC/TR 62283 on guidance for nuclear radiation tests on optical fibres is useful for:

  • Health and safety departments
  • Risk assessment authorities
  • Radiation inspection authorities
  • Optical fibres manufacturers
  • Radiation testing laboratories

Why should you use PD IEC/TR 62283-Guidance for nuclear radiation tests on optical fibres

The optical properties of fibre waveguides can be degraded by exposure to nuclear radiation, primarily through the generation of colour centres in the fibre core.

PD IEC/TR 62283 provides you with guidance on radiation units, dose calculation, radiation shielding, radiation environments and exposure, irradiation facilities and dosimetry, radiation effects on optical fibres, radiation-induced transmission loss, measurement techniques and quality assurance of attenuation measurements, radiation effects on passive fibre optic components, etc.

The guidance provided by PD IEC/TR 62283 assists you in improving the performance of optical fibres, and helps in enhancing safety and counteracting adverse effects on human health and performance due to nuclear radiation.

With obedience and compliance to PD IEC/TR 62283, you can enhance optic fibres’ effectiveness and efficacy and manufacture a standardized product.

What’s changed since the last update?

PD IEC/TR 62283:2010 supersedes IEC/TR 62283:2003, which is withdrawn. PD IEC/TR 62283:2010 has made some technical changes compared to the previous editions IEC/TR 62283:2003. These include:

  • Clause 5 now also covers the Industrial environment
  • A new Clause 9 has been added to deal with "Measurement techniques and quality assurance of attenuation measurements"
