What is BS EN 60794-2 – Indoor cables about ?
BS EN 60794-2 is the second part of the BS EN 60794 multi-series that discusses optical fibre cables.
BS EN 60794-2 is a sectional specification. It gives the requirements that apply to optical fibre cables for indoor use in communications networks. Other types of applications requiring similar types of cables can be considered.
Who is BS EN 60794-2 – Indoor cables for ?
BS EN 60794-2 on sectional specifications of indoor cables is useful for:
- Manufacturers of fibre optic cables
- Telecommunication companies
- Internet service providers
- Testing and inspection personnel
Why should you use BS EN 60794-2– Indoor cables ?
Optical cables comprise several elements or individual constituents, depending on the cable design which takes into account the cable application, operating environment and manufacturing processes, as well as the need to protect the fibre during handling and cabling.
BS EN 60794-2 provides you with the specification for indoor cables that they need to meet for installation and service conditions. BS EN 60794-2 also provides you with the environmental, mechanical, dimensional and electrical characteristics and gives reference to the document that will help you verify them.
Overall, BS EN 60794-2 guidelines help you in the production and quality control phases of indoor cables.
What’s changed since the last update ?
BS EN 60794-2:2017 and replaces BS EN 60794-2:2002. BS EN 60794-2:2017 includes the following significant technical changes with respect to BS EN 60794-2:2002:
- The specification has been streamlined by cross-referencing with IEC 60794-1-1 and IEC TR 61931
- The document structure has been aligned with IEC 60794-3, and Clause 4 on optical fibres was added
- Transmission requirements in Clause 4 were added
- The electrical conductors and the lay-up of the cable elements were introduced into Article 5 on cable elements and construction
- 5.13 on identification was separated in fibre, unit and sheath colour coding
