What is ISO 12870 about?  

ISO 12870 is an international standard that focuses on requirements and test methods of ophthalmic optics and spectacle frames. ISO 12870 specifies fundamental requirements for unglazed spectacle frames designed for use with all prescription lenses. ISO 12870 applies to all spectacle frame types, including rimless mounts, semi-rimless mounts and folding spectacle frames. ISO 12870 is also applicable to spectacle frames made from natural organic materials.

Why should you use ISO 12870 

Taking accurate frame measurements is a critical element when making a new set of spectacles. While the optometrist can provide an accurate refraction and glasses prescription to a patient, inaccurate measurements will result in poor acuity for the wearer upon dispense. 

The purpose of ISO 12870 is to improve the accuracy of measurement of the overall length of the side, it is recommended that the drop be physically straightened. Sinuosity is the intended vertical plane or pronounced curvature in the intended horizontal plane in the part of the side before the ear bend should be ignored. 

ISO 12870 helps to provide clinical evaluations, requirements, preparation and conditioning of test samples. The following list, which is given for information in ISO 12870 that can be examined when checking the innocuousness of materials: 

  • Specification of the materials used 
  • Safety data sheets relating to the materials 
  • Information relating to the suitability of the materials for use with food, in medical devices, or other relevant applications 
  • Information relating to investigations into the allergenic, carcinogenic, toxicological or mutagenic properties of the materials, or their toxicity about reproduction 
  • Information relating to ecotoxicological and other environmental investigations on the materials 

What’s changed since the last update?  

BS EN ISO 12870:2018 supersedes BS EN ISO 12870:2014. BS EN ISO 12870:2018 includes some technical changes concerning BS EN ISO 12870:2014. These include: 

  • 8.8 and Annex C are now covered in more specific standards and are now included as an appropriate reference to this International Standard
