What is BS 799-5 - Oil burning equipment about?
BS 799-5 discusses oil-burning equipment. Oil-burning equipment is a heating device that burns heating oils, diesel fuel or other similar fuels. BS 799-5 specifies requirements for the construction and testing of static carbon steel tanks for the storage of liquid fuel of classes A2, C1, C2, D, E, F, G and H conforming to BS 2869:2006 and FAME (fatty acid methyl esters) conforming to BS EN 14213, for use in conjunction with oil-burning equipment.
BS 799-5 is applicable to tanks of the following types intended for use above ground, either externally or internally to a building:
- Service tanks
- Primary storage tanks with a capacity of 90 l or more with a maximum height of 10 m
Note: BS 799-5 is not applicable to tanks that are to be buried.

Why should you use BS 799-5 - Oil burning equipment?
An oil burner equipment is a part attached to an oil furnace, water heater, or boiler. It provides the ignition of heating oil/biodiesel fuel used to heat either air or water via a heat exchanger. The fuel is atomized into a fine spray usually by forcing it under pressure through a nozzle which gives the resulting flame a specific flow rate, angle of spray and pattern (variations of a cone shape).
The service tanks as discussed in BS 799-5 are of 5 types. Type S1 is a cylindrical tank having a capacity up to and including200 L, Type S2 is a rectangular tank having a capacity up to and including 200 L, Type S3 is a horizontal cylindrical tank having a capacity over 200 L but not exceeding 1 000 L, Type S4 that is a rectangular tank having a capacity over 200 L but not exceeding 1 000 L and Type S5 is a horizontal oval tank having a capacity not exceeding 1 000 L.
BS 799-5 discusses the primary storage tank which is a single skinned tank. The types of primary storage tanks are horizontal cylindrical tanks, horizontal oval tanks (with the major axis horizontal) and rectangular tanks. These tanks are of welded construction and made of rolled carbon steel sheets or plates. Using BS 799-5 you can specify requirements for the construction and testing of static carbon steel oil tanks for the storage of liquid fuel of classes A2, C1, C2, D, E, F, G and H.

BS 799-5:2010 supersedes BS 799-5:1987. BS 799-5:2010 includes some technical changes with respect to BS 799-5:1987. These include:
- The maximum capacity of primary storage tanks of types I, II and III are now 4 500 L
- Methods for leak testing and pressure testing of tanks have been brought up to date in line with current practice
