What is PD IEC TR 63192-Hazard analysis (HA) of I&C systems in NPPs about?

PD IEC TR 63192 is an international standard that discusses instrument and control (I&C) components important to the safety of nuclear powers plants (NPPs). The main objective of PD IEC TR 63192 is to maintain integrity of safety systems containing devices and equipment used in NPPs.

PD IEC TR 63192 specifies the comparison of the hazard analysis (HA) requirements between IAEA framework and NRC-IEEE framework of standards and guidance. The hazard analysis requirements in the different standards were compared with a set of comparison criteria, including the safety principle, the safety process, the definitions, the hazard analysis process, etc. PD IEC TR 63192 includes the comparison results of the HA requirements of the safety control systems of other safety industries in Annex C.

For a nuclear power plant, the design safety and operation safety shall be analyzed, for example, to meet the IAEA Safety Requirements for Design (SSR-2/1) and Operation (SSR-2/2).

The scope of PD IEC TR 63192 is to survey the state of the art in the hazard analysis for the design of I&C system of NPPs.

Who is PD IEC TR 63192- HA of I&C system in NPPs for?

PD IEC TR 63192 on nuclear power plants is applicable to:

  • Nuclear power stations
  • Electric power plants
  • Atomic research organizations
  • Nuclear power plants electrical systems and equipment manufacturers
  • Operators of NPP, system evaluators and licensors
  • Regulatory authorities

Why should you use PD IEC TR 63192-HA of I&C system in NPPs?

There are two atomic regulatory agencies the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) and united states nuclear regulatory commission (NRC) specifies the requirements for hazard analysis of nuclear energy which must be compared to wider and effective use of these safety standards and guidance for Instrumentation and control systems important to safety.

PD IEC TR 63192 compares the hazard analysis requirements of the IAEA framework to the NRC-IEEE framework of standards and guidance. The hazard analysis requirements in the various standards were compared using a set of comparison criteria, which included the safety concept, safety procedure, definitions, hazard analysis method, etc. PD IEC TR 63192 includes the comparison results of the hazard analysis requirements of the safety control systems of other safety industries.

In the form of a three-by-three matrix, PD IEC TR 63192 provides guidelines on Instrumentation and control systems important to safety that have hazard analysis requirements, which is in IEEE 603-2009. PD IEC TR 63192 covers the hazard analysis for the sense and command features of digital systems and also considers the requirements for hazard analysis of the system of systems (SoS), including the software, hardware, and human for the digital systems.

With best industry hazard analysis of an I&C system can help you identify the relationship of the logical faults, error, and failure of I&C systems to the physical harm of the nuclear power plant, and also to find the impact of the external hazard, e.g., tsunami, of the nuclear power plant to the I&C systems.
