What is PD IEC TR 63335 about?

PD IEC TR 63335 identifies a number of issues of particular importance to light water Small Modular Reactors (SMRs), which are not currently adequately addressed, and that could be considered when revising existing publications or that could be the object of new work item proposals.

PD IEC TR 63335 does not cover their specific needs, though there are a number of advanced Generation IV Small Modular Reactor projects underway.

Who is PD IEC TR 63335 for?

PD IEC TR 63335 on small modular reactors of nuclear power plants is applicable to:

  • Manufacture of small modular reactor for nuclear power plants
  • Suppliers and distributors for modular reactor/ electrical power systems
  • Companies dealing with nuclear control systems, control rooms and electrical power systems

Why should you use PD IEC TR 63335?

A nuclear power plant (NPP) is a thermal power plant station in which the heat source is a nuclear reactor. That heat is used to generate steam that drives a steam turbine connected to a generator which helps in producing electricity.

Small modular reactors (SMRs) are nuclear fission reactors which are smaller than conventional nuclear reactors and have an electrical power output less than 300 Mwe or thermal power output which is less than 1000 MWth. Small modular reactors are designed to be manufactured at a plant and transported to a site which is to be installed.

PD IEC TR 63335 specifies the feature for Small Modular Reactor technology development which identifies more than 50 ongoing SMR design projects in worldwide.

The purpose of PD IEC TR 63335 is to design those projects that aim at power or industrial production, through many features listed and many are applicable to those different aims (e.g., research).

Thus, as a buyer, PD IEC TR 63335 object for Small Modular Reactors is to be at least as safe and secure as large nuclear reactors and to be economically competitive with respect to large nuclear reactors, and also to other, non-nuclear sources of energy.
