What is BS EN 61227-Nuclear power plants control rooms about?

BS EN 61227 is an International Standard supplements IEC 60964 which applies to the design for control rooms of nuclear power plants. BS EN 61227 identifies the Human-Machine Interface (HMI) requirements for discrete controls, multiplexed conventional systems, and soft control systems. The main control room of a nuclear power plant, IEC60964 includes general requirements for layout, user needs, and verification and validation methods, and these aspects are not repeated in BS EN 61227. However, IEC 61772 on Visual Displays Unit (VDU) also provides some guidance on displays and indications where necessary for the correct application of the control requirements.

BS EN 61227 is intended for application to the design of new main control rooms in nuclear power plants designed to IEC 60964 which is initiated after the publication of BS EN 61227. If it is desired to apply it to supplementary control points or local control positions, or to existing control rooms or designs, special caution shall be exercised as it makes assumptions such as the automation level that may not apply.

Who is BS EN 61227--Nuclear power plants control rooms for?

BS EN 61227 on nuclear power plants control rooms is useful for:

  • Nuclear power stations
  • Atomic energy agencies
  • Atomic research organizations
  • Nuclear power plants electrical systems and equipment manufacturers
  • Operators of NPP, systems evaluators and licensors
  • Nuclear safety authorities
  • Regulatory authorities

Why should you use BS EN 61227-Nuclear power plant control rooms?

Several studies have been conducted in recent years on the safety of nuclear power facilities, particularly with relation to human factors like operator controls in the control room. These studies have demonstrated the importance of human factors research in nuclear power facilities.

BS EN 61227 specifies the requirements of identifies the Human-Machine Interface (HMI) requirements for discrete controls, multiplexed conventional systems, and soft control systems.

Adopting BS EN 61227 operator controls requirements you will be able to achieve standardized control operation for the control room of nuclear power plants and safe design of the nuclear power plants control room.

Adopting BS EN 61227 can be relevant in future years, the emphasis has been placed on issues of principle, rather than specific technologies.
