What is BS EN 60780-323 Electrical equipment important to safety in nuclear facilities about ?

BS EN 60780-323 is an International Standard that specifies the basic requirements for qualifying electrical equipment important to safety and interfaces (electrical and mechanical) that are to be used in nuclear facilities. The principles, methods, and procedures described are intended to be used for qualifying equipment, maintaining, and extending qualification, and updating qualification, as required if the equipment is modified.

The qualification requirements in BS EN 60780-323, when met, demonstrate, and document the ability of equipment to perform safety function(s) under applicable service conditions, including design basis events and certain design extension conditions, and reduce the risk of environmentally induced common-cause equipment failure.

Note: BS EN 60780-323 does not provide environmental stress levels or performance requirements. Other aspects, relating to quality assurance, selection and use of electronic devices, design, and modification of digital systems are not part of BS EN 60780-323

Who is BS EN 60780-323 Electrical equipment important to safety in nuclear facilities for ?

BS EN 60780-323 on environmental testing in nuclear facilities is useful for:

  • Nuclear power plants (utilities)
  • Qualification laboratories
  • Test facilities
  • Systems evaluators in nuclear facilities
  • Nuclear research organizations
  • Nuclear power plants electrical systems and equipment manufacturers
  • Nuclear power safety regulatory authorities

Why should you use BS EN 60780-323 Electrical equipment important to safety in nuclear facilities ?

The electrical systems in nuclear facilities play an important role in nuclear power plant safety, ensuring plant safety by ensuring continuity of electrical power supply regardless of transitory disturbances or faults throughout operation and post-shutdown.

The basic requirements for qualifying electrical equipment crucial to safety and interfaces to be used in nuclear facilities are specified in BS EN 60780-323.

BS EN 60780-323 applicable to electrical equipment important to safety and its interfaces that are necessary to perform a safety function, or whose failure could adversely affect the safety functions of other equipment.

Electrical equipment in nuclear facilities shall meet its safety functional requirements throughout its installed life. The BS EN 60780-323 advice primarily focuses on the qualification of electrical equipment critical to safety in nuclear facilities, ensuring the efficiency and reliability of electrical equipment in the nuclear facility

The best industry guidance in BS EN 60780-323 will prevent potential failures and hazards by providing the standardized qualification of electrical equipment important to safety.

What’s changed since the last update?

BS EN 60780-323:2017 supersedes BS EN 60068-2-18:2001, which is withdrawn. BS EN 60780-323:2017 includes some technical changes with respect to BS EN 60068-2-18:2001. These include:

  • To harmonize in a unique standard qualification practice formerly given by IEC 60780:1998 and IEEE Std 323-2003 on initial qualification
  • To consider the need to reassess and extend the qualified life of electrical equipment regarding projects to extend the operating life of nuclear facilities
