What is BS EN 17290 about?  

BS EN 17290 discusses about Non-destructive Ultrasonic testing. BS EN 17290 specifies the application of the time-of-flight diffraction (TOFD) technique in the testing of metals for quantifying loss of thickness due to erosion and/or corrosion.  

BS EN 17290 applies to unalloyed or low-alloyed steels. It applies to components with a nominal thickness ≥ 6 mm. For smaller thicknesses, feasibility tests are performed to validate the test technique. This technique is based on the analysis of TOFD images using reflected and/or diffracted ultrasonic signals. 

Note 1: BS EN 17290 does not specify acceptance levels. 

Note 2: BS EN 17290 applies to all types of corrosion and/or erosion damage, particularly those defined in EN ISO 16809.

Why should you use BS EN 17290?  

Time-of-flight diffraction (TOFD) method of ultrasonic testing is a sensitive and accurate method for the non-destructive testing of welds for defects. The TOFD technique can be applied for thickness measurement on the body of components e.g., plates and pipes, and on welded joints.  

The TOFD technique mentioned in BS EN 17290  provides non-destructive testing techniques, for in-service testing, to detect material loss caused by erosion and/or corrosion.  This will ensure accurate assessment of welds is vital to ensure that the stability and integrity of welded structures is not compromised by defects.
