What is ISO 23864 about?

ISO 23864 specifies the application of the TFM technique and related technologies for semi- or fully automated ultrasonic testing of fusion-welded joints in metallic materials of minimum thickness 3,2 mm.

ISO 23864 is applicable to components with welds fabricated using metals which have isotropic and homogeneous conditions. This includes welds in low carbon alloy steels and common aerospace-grade aluminium and titanium alloys, provided they are homogeneous and isotropic and applicable to full penetration welded joints of simple geometry in plates, pipes, and vessels.

Note: ISO 23864 does not include acceptance levels for discontinuities.

Who is ISO 23864 for?

ISO 23864 on non-destructive testing of welds is applicable to

  • Construction, automotive, mechanical Industries
  • Manufacturers of pressure vessels
  • Sheet metal and boiler manufacturers
  • Manufacturers of aircraft & aerospace
  • Shipbuilding industry
  • Aerospace

Why should you use ISO 23864?

Standardization in welding procedures is becoming more and more important due to the increasing quality and performance standards. ISO 23864 specifies four testing levels each corresponding to a different probability of detection of imperfections which improves the quality and performance of welded joints.

ISO 23864 provides provisions on the specific capabilities and limitations of the TFM technique for the detection, locating, sizing and characterization of discontinuities in fusion-welded joints. The TFM technique can be used as a stand-alone approach or in combination with other non-destructive testing (NDT) methods for manufacturing, in-service and post-repair tests.

ISO 23864 allows for the assessment of indications for acceptance purposes based on either amplitude (Equivalent reflector size) and length or height and length of welded joints. Compliance with the standards informs customers that the quality and performance of the products are the best in industry.
