What is ISO 22232-1 about?
ISO 22232-1 is the first part of the ISO 22232 series of standards on characterizing and verifying ultrasonic non-destructive test equipment. BS EN ISO 22232-1 covers testing instruments, while BS EN 12668-1and ISO 12710 deal with probes and with combined equipment.
ISO 22232-1 specifies methods and acceptance criteria within the frequency range of 0,5 MHz to 15 MHz, for assessing the electrical performance of digital ultrasonic instruments for pulse operation using A-scan display, for manual ultrasonic non-destructive testing with single-or dual-transducer probes.
Note1: ISO 22232-1 is also applicable for multi-channel instruments.
Note2: ISO 22232-1 can partly be applicable to ultrasonic instruments in automated systems, but other tests can be needed to ensure satisfactory performance.
Note3: ISO 22232-1 excludes ultrasonic instruments for continuous waves.
Note4: ISO 22232-1 also excludes ultrasonic phased array instruments, see e.g. ISO 185631. If a phased array instrument has dedicated connectors for single-or dual-transducer probes this document is applicable for these channels.

Why should you use BS EN ISO 22232-1?
Ultrasonic test equipment uses high-frequency sound waves to measure the thickness or hardness of a material. Ultrasonic tests often are performed to assess corrosion on pipes, valves, and steel or aluminium constructions. An ultrasonic instrument is also used to detect flaws such as cracks and leaks. BS EN ISO 22232-1 specifies methods and acceptance criteria for assessing the electrical performance of digital ultrasonic instruments to ensure satisfactory performance which would prevent hazardous conditions.
