What is BS EN 12543-2 about?

BS EN 12543-2 is the second part of a multi series which specifies a method for the measurement of effective focal spot dimensions above 0,1 mm of X-ray systems up to and including 1000 kV tube voltage by means of the pinhole camera method with digital evaluation.

BS EN 12543-2 document provides instructions for determining the effective size (dimensions) of standard (macro focal spots) and mini focal spots of industrial X-ray tubes by measuring of an image of a focal spot that has been radiographically recorded with a “pinhole” technique and evaluated with a digital method.

Note1: Under BS EN 12543-2, the tube voltage applied for the measurement is restricted to 200 kV for visual film evaluation and may be selected higher than 200 kV if digital detectors are used.

Note 2: For the characterization of commercial X-ray tube types (i.e. for advertising or trade) it is advised that the specific FS (Focal spot) values of Annex A are used.

Who is BS EN 12543-2 for?

Determining the effective size of standard and mini focal spots of industrial X-ray tubes by applying the pin hole method,BS EN 12543-2 is an effective and functional document for the following:

  • Manufacturers dealing in industrial X- ray tubes.
  • Providers of X- ray tubes

Why should you use BS EN 12543-2

The imaging quality and the resolution of Xray images depend highly on the characteristics of the effective focal spot, in particular the size and the two-dimensional intensity distribution as seen from the detector plane.

The method compared to in the  BS EN 12543-2 series allows to obtain an image of the focal spot and to see the state of it (e.g., cratering of the anode).BS EN 12543-2 document helps you in measuring effective focal spot dimensions of your X-ray systems along with digital evaluation using the pinhole camera method thus, increasing the efficiency and durability of your X- ray systems.

BS EN 12543-2 helps you in evaluating your commercial as well as industrial X ray tubes to increase the imaging quality and the resolution of  your X- ray images by measuring the effective focal spot dimensions.

BS EN 12543-2 helps you in providing a high-quality product to the user which has a global acceptance worldwide.

What’s changed since the last update?

BS EN 12543-2:2021 supersedes BS EN 125432:2008 which is withdrawn due to following changes:

  • The document is technically and editorially revised.
  • The scope of application was extended up to 1000 kV for digital detectors.
  • Introduction, new classification and result of focal spot measurement.
  • Introduction of a new measurement  procedure “Integrated Line Profile”.
