What is BSI Flex 701 about?

Nature is central to our wellbeing and economy, with nature-based solutions pivotal for biodiversity, net zero, and other environmental outcomes. Nature markets offer a pathway to increased financing for scaling environmental improvements. Their success relies on consistency and high integrity to create confidence.

BSI Flex 701 aims to establish principles that underpin the integrity of the process in nature markets, ensuring market confidence. It is the first of a suite of standards planned as part of the Nature Investment Standards Programme, supported by Defra.

What does BSI Flex 701 cover?

BSI Flex 701 specifies requirements for the design and operation of high-integrity nature markets, including processes to generate, trade and store nature units. It establishes an overarching framework and 22 core principles to help guard against greenwashing, support environmental outcomes and boost confidence.

Who is BSI Flex 701 for?

This important standard will be particularly valuable to:

  • Nature market participants.
  • Nature market initiatives including codes, standards, schemes, suppliers, verification and validation bodies, and registries.
  • Stakeholders in nature markets or in the environmental outcomes of trading nature units.
