What is BS EN 840-3 about?

BS EN 840 discusses mobile waste and recycling containers. BS EN 840-3 is a third part of the multi-series on mobile waste containers that give dimensions and design for mobile waste containers with 4 wheels with dome lid(s).

BS EN 840-3 specifies dimensions and design requirements for mobile waste and recycling containers with 4 wheels, with dome lid(s) and capacity up to 1 300 l to be used by trunnion and/or comb lifting device. These containers are only approved for those lifting devices.

Who is BS EN 840-3 for?

BS EN 840-3 on mobile waste containers is useful for:

  • Manufacturers of hydraulic lifting devices
  • Designers and manufacturers of mobile waste containers
  • Recycling plants
  • Waste transporters
  • Design engineers
  • Quality control personnel

Why should you use BS EN 840-3?

Mobile waste and recycling containers are designed containers fitted with wheels intended to temporarily store waste. The containers are constructed so that when they are unloaded or loaded with a nominal load, they fit on approved compatible lifting devices. They are automatically locked safely into the lifting devices during the lifting operation.

In addition to dimensions, BS EN 840-3 provides nominal mass details for the containers. Safety and health requirements are elaborated, along with testing. Information about marking is also provided in BS EN 840-3. Using BS EN 840-3 guidelines, you will be able to design mobile waste and recycling containers that comply with design specifications.

What’s changed since the last update?

BS EN 840-3:2020 supersedes EN 840-3:2012.

The main changes compared to the previous edition are as follows:

  • Figure 2 "System dimensions design B (type plastic)" and Figure 3 "System dimensions design C (type metal)" have been updated
  • Figure 9 "Handles above trunnion (type metal)" and Figure 10 "Functional dimension for frontal receivers" have been added
  • Former Annex A "Recommendations for manufacturers of lifting devices" has been deleted
  • The document has been editorially revised and adapted to the new design rules
