What is BS EN 280 – Mobile elevating work platforms about?

BS EN 280 is an international standard that discusses the examinations and tests for mobile elevating work platforms. The mobile elevating work platforms (MEWPs) are widely spread machines used for performing miscellaneous work at heights.

BS EN 280 specifies requirements and measures for all types and sizes of Mobile Elevating Work Platform intended to move persons to work positions where they are carrying out work from the work platform (WP) with the intention that persons are getting on and off the work platform only at access positions at ground level or on the chassis.

Note: BS EN 280 does not cover the hazards arising from:

  • Use in potentially explosive atmospheres
  • Electromagnetic incompatibility
  • Work from the platform on external live electric systems
  • Use of compressed gases for load-bearing components
  • Getting on and off the work platform at changing levels
  • Specific applications (e.g., railway, ships) are covered by National or local regulations.

Who is BS EN 280 – Mobile elevating work platforms for?

BS EN 280 on mobile elevating work platforms applies to:

Why should you use BS EN 280 – Mobile elevating work platforms?

The mobile elevating work platform is a mobile machine that is intended to move persons to work positions where they are carrying out work from the work platform with the intention that persons are getting on and off the work platform only at access positions at ground level or on the chassis and which consists as a minimum of a work platform with controls, an extending structure and a chassis.

Machinery complies with the safety requirements and/or protective measures of this clause. In addition, the machine is designed according to the principles of EN ISO 12100:2010 for relevant but not significant hazards, which are not dealt with by BS EN 280.

BS EN 280 provides you with stability calculations that are calculated such as forces created by structural masses and rated load, wind forces, manual forces and calculation of overturning and stabilizing moments.

With BS EN 280 you can be ensured that the products consistently meet and exceed quality assurance targets.
