What is BS EN IEC 601278 on Fuse resistors about?

BS EN IEC 601278 is the eighth part of an international standard that covers guidelines for miniature fuses.

BS EN IEC 601278 relates to fuse resistors with particular overcurrent protection rated up to AC 500 V and/or DC 500 V for printed circuits and other substrate systems, used for the protection of electric appliances, electronic equipment, and component parts thereof, normally intended to be used indoors.

Fuse resistors with particular overcurrent protection can safely interrupt high short-circuit currents but are not capable of interrupting overload currents

Note: BS EN IEC 601278 does not apply to fuse resistors with particular overcurrent protection for appliances intended to be used under special conditions, such as in a corrosive or explosive atmosphere.

Who is BS EN IEC 601278 on Fuse resistors for?

BS EN IEC 601278 on fuse resistors is useful for:

  • Manufacturers and suppliers of miniature fuses
  • Dealers and distributors of miniature fuses
  • Designers of miniature fuses
  • Test /service providers for miniature fuses

Why should you use BS EN IEC 601278 on Fuse resistors?

Miniature fuse resistors perform the function of a fuse within a particular overcurrent range; therefore, it is referred to as fuse resistors with particular overcurrent protection. Fuse resistors with particular overcurrent protection can safely interrupt high short-circuit currents.

BS EN IEC 601278 establishes uniform requirements for fuse resistors with particular overcurrent protection, which helps you to protect appliances or parts of appliances in the most suitable way.

BS EN IEC 601278 defines the performance of the fuse resistors with particular overcurrent protection, which guides the manufacturers of electrical appliances and electronic equipment to ensure replacement of fuse resistors with particular overcurrent protection by those of similar dimensions and characteristics.

BS EN IEC 601278 also gives uniform test methods for fuse resistors with particular overcurrent protection, so as to allow verification of the values like rated dissipation, functioning characteristic, and rated breaking capacity values specified by the manufacturer.

What’s changed since the last update?

BS EN IEC 601278:2018 supersedes PD IEC/PAS 601278:2014, which is withdrawn.
