What is BS 2782-1:Method 153B Testing methods for stiffness in torsion of flexible polyvinyl chloride about?

BS 2782-1 is a British Standard that discusses the method 153B for determination of stiffness in torsion of flexible polyvinyl chloride sheets

Method 153B has been prepared under the direction of the Plastics Standards Committee.

Method 153B is one of a series of methods described in BS 2782 for assessing the effect of temperature on the torsional properties of plastics materials.

BS 2782-1: Method 153B specifies a method for determining the temperatures corresponding to three conventional characteristic values for the stiffness in torsion of plasticized compounds of homopolymers and copolymers of vinyl chloride.

Who is BS 2782-1: Method 153B - Testing methods for stiffness in torsion of flexible polyvinyl chloride for?

BS 2782-1: Method 153B on stiffness in torsion of flexible polyvinyl chloride is relevant to:

  • Manufacturers of polyvinyl chloride sheet
  • Manufacturers of thermoplastic materials
  • Plastic industry
  • Product designers/product development teams
  • Quality control and testing authorities

Why should you use BS 2782-1: Method 153B- Testing methods for stiffness in torsion of flexible polyvinyl chloride?

In the case of compositions based on plasticized polyvinyl chloride, all the curves for the logarithm of the stiffness in torsion as a function of temperature have a similar appearance, in the form of a reversed S. Each curve is essentially characterized by three regions i.e two extreme regions and an intermediate region. With allowance for the precision of the tests, the three characteristic values for the stiffness in torsion can therefore be represented as:

  • 300 MPa
  • 23 MPa
  • 4 MPa

Thus BS 2782-1: Method 153B tests can help determine the values of stiffness that provide indications on the behaviour of flexible polyvinyl chloride across the regions on the curve. This assessment can be beneficial to evaluate whether or not your materials possess the required toughness and rigidity required for the end-use. As a result, incidents of product failures and deformations can be avoided. Moreover, this assessment can make a positive contribution towards your product development initiatives.
