What is ISO 45486 about? 

ISO 45486 is a multi-part series in European standard which specifies a method of testing full‐flow lubricating oil filters for internal combustion engines to determine their ability to withstand a static pressure objective and to determine their burst pressure and the failure mode concerned. 

ISO 45486 explains the technical specifications like terms, definitions, test rig, test fluid, preparation and test procedure for testing static burst pressure of full-flow lubricating oil filters for internal combustion engines. 

Note: ISO 45486 does not apply to filters for use in aeronautical applications or plastic components.

Why should you use ISO 45486? 

Lubricant oil filters in used in an internal combustion engine, which helps moving parts to rub against each other causing frictional force. Lubricating oil reduces the wear and tear of the moving parts. 

ISO 45486 provides you with the test procedures for measuring the static burst pressure for testing the performance of full-flow lubricating oil filters manufactured with metal pressure vessel materials for internal combustion engines. It’s been prepared in separate parts; each part is related to a particular performance. 

ISO 45486 helps you determine the ability of internal combustion engines to withstand a static pressure objective and to determine their burst pressure and the failure mode concerned. ISO 45486 lets you ensure the mechanical integrity of full flow lubricating oil filters when there is maximum surge in pressure.  

ISO 45486 establishes that, the test information necessary to access the characteristics of a filter, if agreed between the purchaser and the manufacture, the tests can be conducted separately. It also deals with filter modules in terms of static burst pressure, which helps you in carrying out the test for full-flow lubricating oil filters for internal combustion engines in a standardized manner. 

What’s changed since the last update? 

BS ISO 45486:2021 supersedes BS ISO 45486:2012, which is withdrawn. BS ISO 45486:2021 includes: 

  • The verification that filters meet technical requirements and the determination of the filter failing pressure have been separated into 6.1 and 6.2, respectively. 
  • The first pressure increment in the verification has been specified with a known value 
  • Each incremental pressure has been changed to the smaller value for more accurate determination
