What is BS EN 993‑10 about?

BS EN 993‑10 is part 10 of a multi series of European standards on Methods of test for dense shaped refractory products.

BS EN 993‑10 specifies three methods for the determination of the permanent change in dimensions on heating of dense shaped refractory products.

Note: The methods can be applied to materials sensitive to oxidation. However, some of these materials can be affected during the test in such a way as to make the measurement of the dimensional changes impossible to carry out to the required accuracy.

Who is BS EN 993‑10 for?

BS EN 993‑10 on refractory products is relevant to:

  • Dense shaped refractory products manufacturers
  • Mechanical engineers

Why should you use BS EN 993‑10

Refractory materials include dense shaped refractory products, refractory bricks and insulating bricks, fiber-based refractory products as well as unshaped products. They primarily have a load-bearing and insulating function. Depending on the application, they are subjected to mechanical, thermal and chemical loading.

BS EN 993‑10 covers three methods for the determination of the permanent change in dimensions on heating of dense shaped refractory products. Methods one and two follow linear measurements that examine the test pieces, noting particularly any blisters or accretions products during firing. Method 3 follows volume measurement which measures the volume of the test piece.

Permanent changes in dimensions can cause problems in the manufacturing process that use refractory products. You can use BS EN 993‑10 to determine the permanent change in dimensions on heating of refractory products which will enable you to understand the extent to which the dimensions are changed and take further business decisions accordingly which will increase efficiency and reduce costs.

What’s changed since the last update?

BS EN 993‑10:2020 supersedes BS EN 993‑10:1998, which is withdrawn.

BS EN 993‑10:2020 mentions the addition of precision data in clause 10 derived from a large scale interlaboratory study completed by 10 European laboratories with respect to BS EN 993‑10:1998.
