What is BS EN 993-18 - Determination of bulk density of granular materials about?

BS EN 993 is a series of European standards that discusses the test method for dense shaped refractory products. BS EN 993-18 specifies a method for the determination of the bulk density of the dense shaped refractory products.

BS EN 993-18 specifies a method based on water absorption with vacuum for the determination of the bulk density of granular refractory materials (grain bulk density) having a grain size greater than 2 mm.

Note1: This method is proposed as an alternative to the method based on mercury displacement with vacuum described in EN 993-17 which is to be used as the reference method because of its reproducibility. However, mercury is known to be a hazardous substance and the method described in BS EN 993-18 is recommended for all routine purposes. Nevertheless, depending on the nature of the material tested, the two methods may give different results.

Note2: For materials that are sensitive to contact with water, a suitable organic liquid should be used. The immersion liquid should not fractionate at a pressure above the absolute pressure attained in the test. For example, distilled paraffin can be used for hydratable materials.

Who is BS EN 993-18 - Determination of bulk density of granular materials for?

BS EN 993-18 on the determination of bulk density of granular materials is useful for:

  • Granular materials manufacturers
  • Mechanical engineers
  • Casting and moulding industries
  • Testing laboratories

Why should you use BS EN 993-18 - Determination of bulk density of granular materials

A refractory material or refractory is a material that is resistant to decomposition by heat, pressure, or chemical attack, and retains strength and form at hot temperatures. Refractory materials are used in furnaces, kilns, incinerators, and reactors. It is important to determine the bulk density of refractory products.

BS EN 993-18 helps you by providing a test method for determining the bulk density of granular materials by the water method with vacuum, which can be useful for various industries that use refractory products. This would be crucial to ensure optimal operational efficiency, strength, and long service-life for your specific engineering and product needs.

With best-practice guidance on determining the bulk density of granular materials by the water method in BS EN 993-18, you will be able to incorporate standardized methods to evaluate the overall performance of granular materials. It enables the manufacturers to make the right choice based on chemical composition as per your specified engineering and industrial needs.
