What is BS 4162 – Clothing buttons about?
BS 4162 is an International Standard that focuses on methods of test for buttons.
BS 4162 describes methods of testing for all types of buttons for the fastening and ornamentation of wearing apparel.
Note 1: The tests cannot be directly related to laundering and dry-cleaning occurring in practice because other factors such as mechanical effects cannot be reproduced satisfactorily on a small scale, but they can be used to indicate the suitability of buttons for general and specific uses.

Why should you use BS 4162 – Clothing buttons?
Clothe’s button is a small circular flat disklike piece of solid material having holes through which it can be stitched to the clothing and used to fasten or close the garment by passing through a loop or hole in the other side. Sometimes purely decorative, nonutilitarian buttons are also used to enhance the appearance of the apparel.
BS 4162 determines the resistance of all types of buttons to normal “wear and tear” such as may be encountered during the lifetime of garments.
BS 4162 informs that the buttons are subjected:
- To tension whereby the load is steadily increased until the point of breakage occurs
- To impact by a pendulum of a specified mass released from a specified height.
BS 4162 covers the sampling procedure for the buttons which helps you in the determination of abrasion resistance, determination of strength, and resistance to atmospheric corrosion. Using these test methods, the buttons are examined for any change in appearance.
BS 4162 also helps to assist in contact with standard multi-fibre adjacent fabric and then mechanically agitated under specified conditions of time and temperature in a soap or detergent solution, rinsed and dried.
What’s changed since the last update?
BS 4162:1983 supersedes BS 4162:1967. BS 4162:1983 includes some technical changes concerning BS 4162:1967. These include:
- Units and quantities are now based on the metric system of measurement
- New tests are described for resistance to wash liquors; resistance to dry-cleaning solvents; resistance to free steam pressing and resistance to hot head pressing
- The test for the strength of buttons has been extended to include an impact test
- Additional tests are given for resistance to abrasive action, resistance to atmospheric corrosion and resistance to water, sea-water (sodium chloride solution) and chlorine water
