What is BS EN 846-6 - Wall tie tensile and compressive load capability and load displacement about?  

BS EN 846-6 is the sixth part of the multiple series document that is applicable to ancillary components for masonry. 

BS EN 846-6 specifies a method for determining the tensile and compressive load capacity and load-displacement characteristics of wall ties screwed, nailed, grouted or otherwise attached to frame elements or to inner leaf materials. The test is intended for ties for connecting masonry leaves to frame structures and to the inner leaves of cavity walls other than by embedding the inner connection in a mortar joint.

Masonry units shall be as specified in accordance with EN 771. All of the masonry units for individual tests shall be taken from the same consignment. Masonry units shall be in an air-dry condition unless otherwise specified. 

BS EN 846-6 can help you with single end test with the following procedures to determine the characteristics of wall ties: 

  • If no movement tolerance or slope tolerance is given for the particular tie system, load the specimen onto the test system or test machine so that the tie body is axial and aligned at the test machine's centre of the action 
  • If slope tolerant or movement tolerant ties must be tested, offset one end of the specimen over a distance equal to the maximum slope or half the maximum movement stated by the manufacturer, and repeat this fifty times in both directions 
  • After that, move one end of the specimen away from the test machine or test system's centre of the action by a distance equal to the maximum slope or half of the maximum movement
