What is BS EN 60244-13 - Sound broadcasting guidelines about?

BS EN 60244 is a series on methods of measurement for radio transmitters. Radio transmitters an electronic device that produces radio waves with an antenna. BS EN 60244-13 contains the method of measurement to assess the performance characteristics of frequency-modulated transmitters for sound broadcasting. To assess all other characteristics, BS EN 60244-13 needs to be used in conjunction with the publications quoted in clause 2.

BS EN 60244-13 is intended to be used for type tests and acceptance or factory tests. It is not mandatory to measure all the described characteristics. Additional measurements may be carried out as an agreement between the customer and manufacturer. The performance characteristics measured by BS EN 60244-13 make possible the comparison of the results of measurements made by different observers.

Note: Limiting values for acceptable performance are not covered by BS EN 60244-13 but, in connection with the presentation of measured characteristics, some data are given for clarity.

Why should you use BS EN 60244-13 - Sound broadcasting guidelines?

Radio transmitters themselves generate a radio frequency alternating current, which is applied to the antenna. BS EN 60244-13 comprise one part dealing with general characteristics, with cross-references to relevant CCIR publications2) and the Radio Regulations, and several specialized parts, each dealing with particular types of the transmitter. The term “frequency-modulated sound transmitter” is used in BS EN 60244-13 to denote equipment with an FM radio-frequency output and a baseband frequency input that can accept monophonic, stereophonic, and supplementary service multiplexed signals. The FM sound transmitter is tested at its rated output power under normal operating conditions.

The mains supply and the environmental conditions are stated with the measurement results. The FM sound transmitter is connected to a test load with an impedance expressed in return-loss relative to the nominal load impedance of the transmitter of not less than 26 dB at frequencies within the FM broadcasting band and 16 dB at frequencies of any measured unwanted frequency outside this band. For measurement, the input and output signal arrangements are shown in the form of diagrams given in BS EN 60244-13. The impedance of the test equipment, the test object, and all connections between them are accurately matched. The performance characteristics are measured via a directional coupler. The measurement method of the transmitter's general characteristics such as input impedance, output power, and frequency stability will be described in BS EN 60244-13. Using BS EN 60244-13 you can specify the method of measurement to assess the performance characteristics of frequency-modulated transmitters for sound broadcasting.
