BS 3338-20 standard is a part of the BS 3338 series that discusses the determination of nickel in capping metal using the photometric method for the sampling and analysis of tin and tin alloys. Tin is alloyed with lead to produce solders with melting points lower than those of either tin or lead. Small amounts of various metals, notably antimony and silver, are added to tin-lead solders to increase their strength.

Why should you use BS 3338-20 – Tin and tin alloys?

Tin is alloyed with lead to produce solders with melting points lower than those of either tin or lead. Small amounts of various metals, notably antimony and silver, are added to tin-lead solders to increase their strength. Nickel is commonly used as a protective outer coating for softer metals. Because of its ability to withstand extremely high temperatures, nickel is the metal of choice for making superalloys.

BS 3338-20 provides you with the principle for nickel using a photometric method in which the nickel is determined photometrically with dimethylglyoxime after the removal of interfering elements. The method is recommended for nickel contents between 0.001 % to 0.01 % of nickel. BS 3338-20 gives you the method which applies to tin and tin alloys containing up to 0.25 % of copper.
