What is BS 4044 Determination of fibre length about?

BS 4044 is an international standard that focuses on the quality of fabrics and textiles.

BS 4044 describes methods for the determination of fibre length by the use of a comb sorter diagram.

BS 4044 also described the following procedures:

  • Method A is applicable to samples composed of individual fibres, particularly to samples of cotton fibres, and samples of waste silk and uncrimped staple fibres having a fibre length of approximately 50 mm.
  • Method B is applicable to twistless combed slivers and prepared rovings of a type used in the woollen and worsted systems.

Note: For longer types of waste silk and staple fibre, the technique for arranging the test specimen in the form of a continuous sorter diagram becomes progressively more difficult. Only especially skilled operators can make satisfactory sorter diagrams on samples containing many fibres of 100 mm or more in length. Moreover, the time required to make a test increases steadily with the increasing fibre length of the sample.

Who is BS 4044 - Determination of fibre length for?

BS 4044 on the determination of fibre length by comb sorter diagram is useful for:

  • Textile manufacturer
  • Clothing industries
  • Textile testing laboratories
  • Regulatory authorities
  • Quality control personnel
  • Product development teams

Why should you use BS 4044 - Determination of fibre length

The quality of the clothing products in the textile industry mainly depends on the quality of the fabrics used for the clothing, may it be apparel, bedding, or any other piece of cloth. Thus, it is essential that fabric undergoes various test methods to prove and improve its reliability, efficiency and class.

BS 4044 covers test methods, scope, apparatus, test specimens, calculation expression, and atmosphere for conditioning and testing to determine the fibre length by comb sorter diagram.

The users of BS 4044 benefit as:

  • The test specimen contains several thousand fibres, a factor that leads to the reduction of sampling errors. The size of the specimen, however, is not unduly large, so the method may often be applied when testing fibres that need to be untwisted from a sample of yarn.
  • The method can be applied most easily to straight fibres of short to moderate length and is suitable for use when testing samples of fibre spun normally on the cotton system.

Thus, BS 4044 provides you with comprehensive information useful for producing high-quality, cost-effective, durable fabric and hence apparel.
