What is BS 7317-5 – Copper cathode about? 

BS 7317-5 is the fifth part of the BS 7317 series that discusses the determination of sulphur by hydrogen sulphide evolution and spectrophotometry for the analysis of high purity copper cathode. Copper cathodes are used in the manufacturing of continuous cast copper rods which are further used for the wire, cable and transformer industries. 

BS 7317-5 describes a method for the determination of the actual amount of the impurity element sulphur present in high purity copper cathode (designated Cu-CATH-1), by hydrogen sulphide evolution and spectrophotometry. It is applicable to concentrations of sulphur within the range 5 4g/g to 30 4g/g (0.0005 % m/m to 0.0030 % m/m).

Why should you use BS 7317-5 – Copper cathode? 

Copper cathodes are used in the manufacturing of continuous cast copper rods which are further used for the wire, cable and transformer industries. Spectrophotometry is best used for the determination of one or more parameters on a routine basis. It provides an accurate, easy, quick and cheap method of analysis. 

BS 7317-5 provides you with guidance in which the sulphur is determined by Iodate titration or IR detection. A total of 97% of sulphur in the sample is converted to sulphur dioxide by burning the sample in oxygen at high temperatures. Any sulphur present in the analysis sample is reduced to hydrogen sulphide by dissolution in a reducing acid mixture containing antimony.
