What is BS 7317-6 – Copper cathode about?

BS 7317-6 is the sixth part of the BS 7317 series that discusses the determination of phosphorus and silicon by spectrophotometry for the analysis of high purity copper cathode. Copper cathodes are used in the manufacturing of continuous cast copper rods which are further used for the wire, cable and transformer industries.

BS 7317-6 describes a method for the determination of the actual amounts of the impurity elements phosphorus and silicon present in high purity copper cathode (designated Cu-CATH-1), by spectrophotometry. It applies to concentrations of the elements not exceeding the following limits: phosphorus 20 4g/g (0.0020 % m/m) maximum, silicon 25 4g/g (0.0025 % m/m) maximum.

Who is BS 7317-6 – Copper cathode for?

BS 7317-6 on copper cathode applies to:

  • Manufacturer of copper cathodes
  • Quality testing personnel
  • Electrical engineers

Why should you use BS 7317-6 – Copper cathode?

Copper cathodes are used in the manufacturing of continuous cast copper rods which are further used for the wire, cable and transformer industries. Spectrophotometry is best used for the determination of one or more parameters on a routine basis. It provides an accurate, easy, quick and cheap method of analysis.

BS 7317-6 provides you with guidance about a process in which the phosphate present is determined by comparison of the blue colour with known standards of phosphate, subjected to the same reaction with molybdate reagent. The silicon in the extract is determined by either atomic absorption or atomic emission spectrometry.

BS 7317-6 helps you in analysing the high purity copper cathode as the phosphorus and silicon present in the samples are converted to the heteropolymolybdate complexes, separated by extraction into organic solvents and determined spectrophotometrically as the reduced complexes. With BS 7317-5 you can be ensured that the products consistently meet and exceed quality assurance targets.
