BS 5116 is an International Standard that focuses on testing the cotton fibres in order to produce good quality fabrics. BS 5116 specifies a method of test for the determination of the breaking tenacity of cotton fibres arranged in a parallel manner in a flat bundle. 

BS 5116 applies either to fibres from raw cotton, to fibres from various stages in the manufacturing process, or to fibres separated or extracted from manufactured cotton products.  

BS 5116 is applicable to fibres being tested either at a nominal gauge length of zero or a finite gauge length.
