What is ISO 10070 - Metallic powders about?

ISO 10070 is an international standard on metallic powders that discusses the criteria for measuring the air permeability of metal powders. ISO 10070 specifies a method of measuring the air permeability and the porosity of a packed bed of metal powder, and of deriving therefrom the value of the envelope-specific surface area. The permeability is determined under steady-state flow conditions, using a laminar flow of air at a pressure near atmospheric.

Several different methods have been proposed for this determination, and several test devices are available commercially. They give similar, reproducible results, provided that the general instructions given in ISO 10070  are respected, and the test parameters are identical.

NOTE: ISO 10070  does not specify a particular commercial test device and corresponding test procedure.

NOTE: ISO 10070  does not include the measurement of permeability by a constant volume method.

Who is ISO 10070 - Metallic powders for?

ISO 10070 on metallic powders is relevant to:

  • Metallurgist
  • Laboratories and R&D

Why should you use ISO 10070 - Metallic powders?

Metal powder is a metal that has been broken down into powder form. The air permeability specific surface of metal powder is a single-parameter measurement of the fineness of the metal powder.

ISO 10070 navigates you through the permeability, Carman-Arnell, and Kozeny-Carman formulae, envelope density, preparation of test portion, preparation of packed powder bed, examples of methods of determining the permeability to air of a powder bed.

With obedience and compliance to ISO 10070, you can calculate a specific surface area of the powder using different formulae you can also measure the permeability of a packed powder bed to a laminar gas flow. ISO 10070 provides you with comprehensive information useful throughout the process of determination of envelope specific surface area from measurements of the permeability to air of a powder bed under steady-state flow conditions

What’s changed since the last update?

BS EN ISO 10070:2019 cancels and replaces the first edition (ISO 10070:1991), which has been technically revised.

The main changes compared to the previous edition are as follows:

  • Introduction of an automated test device based on the Gooden and Smith method, including procedure and calibration
