What is BS EN 4258 - Links between types of EN standards about?

BS EN 4258 is a European Standard that demonstrates the links between types of European Standards dealing with metallic materials.

BS EN 4258 specifies the general organization of metallic material standards, their links with other types of EN standards, and their use, for aerospace applications.

Who is BS EN 4258 - Links between types of EN standards for?

BS EN 4258 on Links between types of EN standards is useful for:

  • Manufacturers of metallic materials
  • Aerospace and Aeronautical Industry
  • Aerospace and Mechanical engineers
  • Regulatory authorities
  • Quality control authorities

Why should you use BS EN 4258 - Links between types of EN standards?

BS EN 4258 mentions the scope, references, definitions, description, links, and overview to mitigate any ambiguity and to avoid any misinterpretations between entities in the industry.  BS EN 4258 also mentions relevant tables, figures and annexes.

For the purpose of standardization of metallic materials, AECMA had originally based the organization of this standardization on a system that provided strong interlinks between a material standard referring to BS EN 2500 and its supporting standards.

The basic change in these links is that the dimensional standards and designation standards for semi-finished products, where applicable, have been dissociated from the material standard. Additionally, product qualification procedures are being introduced. Pending the updating of the standards, these two organizations exist in parallel:

  • The original one described by BS EN 2500
  • The new one described in this standard

To enable progressive updating of the standards, an intermediate procedure is to be followed.

Adopting BS EN 4258 can ensure the optimum organization, enhancement of quality control, and mitigates any risks or confusion.
