What is BS EN 13480-6 – Metallic industrial piping about?

BS EN 13480 is a European standard that discusses metallic industrial piping. The metallic pipe is intended to guarantee the security and the perfect water tightness of the industrial equipment.

BS EN 13480-6 is the sixth series of the European standard that discusses the additional requirements for buried piping. BS EN 13480-6 specifies requirements for industrial piping either totally buried or partly buried and partly run-in sleeves or similar protection.

When buried piping is subjected to BS EN 13480-6 standard connects to piping installed under other jurisdictions such as pipelines, the transition should be made at a close element e.g., an isolating or regulating valve separating the two sections. This should be close to the boundary of the industrial site, but maybe inside or outside the boundary.

Who is BS EN 13480-6 – Metallic industrial piping for?

BS EN 13480-6 on buried piping for metallic industrial piping is applicable to:

  • Manufacture of metallic pipe for industries
  • Quality testing companies
  • Suppliers and retailers for metallic pipes

Why should you use BS EN 13480-6 – Metallic industrial pipe?

Metallic piping can resist a wide range of different temperatures and pressures as can be the case when using heat exchangers or boilers. The accessories which are used to put together the metallic pipes are intended to guarantee the security and the perfect water tightness of the industrial equipment.

BS EN 13480-6 guideline helps you in providing safety where the buried piping within an industrial site presents a potential hazard to site personnel, equipment and environment. The sections set out in BS EN 13480-6 guide as to how the hazard presented by the piping is assessed, and the integrity of the piping system maintained. The main factors which are considered as:

  • Design including Routing, Layout, Interaction with connecting systems
  • Materials and Construction Specification and Quality Control
  • Operating Procedures and Control

BS EN 13480-6 also provides guidance on corrosion protection where the buried piping is protected from external corrosion which arises from water and ground contaminants, and the effects of stray earth electrical currents. Protection is provided by a combination of coating the pipe surface and cathodic electrical protection.

Using BS EN 13480-6, you can develop an enhanced understanding of the additional requirements for buried piping.

What’s changed since the last update?

BS EN 134806:2017+A1:2019 supersedes BS EN 134806:2017, which is withdrawn.
