What is BS EN 14917 about?

BS EN 14917 specifies the requirements for design, manufacture and installation of metal bellows expansion joints with circular cross-section for pressure applications with maximum allowable pressure greater than 0.5 bar.

Metal bellows expansion joints are used as parts in pressure vessels or piping components.

Who is BS EN 14917 for?

BS EN 14917 on metal bellows is relevant to:

  • Manufacturers of metal bellows
  • Manufacturers of pipeline and pipeline components
  • Welders
  • Fabricators

Why should you use BS EN 14917?

In mechanical and industrial applications, an expansion joint is a mid-structure separation designed to relieve stress on building materials caused by building movement. BS EN 14917 informs you about the design, manufacture and installation of metal bellows expansion joints for pressure applications.

BS EN 14917 helps you with the classifications of expansion joints and its parts, which are designed according to the type of movements, which can be absorbed. Expansion joints are designed to withstand the specified pressure at the specified temperature.

BS EN 14917 covers the right manufacturing methods to ensure the expansion joint conforms to the design requirements. These test methods enable you to produce high-quality metal bellows, which are ideal for mechanical joints in pressure vessels or pipes, that efficiently absorb vibration and shock.

What’s changed since the last update?

BS EN 14917:2021 supersedes EN 14917:2009+A1:2012

BS EN 14917:2021 includes some technical changes with respect to EN 14917:2009+A1:2012. These include:

  • Addition of design in the creep range
  • Modification of stress calculation for internal pressure capability and in-plane instability calculation
  • Reformulation of column instability calculation
  • Extension of material characteristics for calculating forces and moments on pressurised expansion joints
  • Revision of testing, inspection and documentation.
