What is BS EN 60601-2-12:2006?

Critical care ventilators are essential medical equipment in every intensive care unit (ICU). With approximately half of all ICU patients in need of artificial respiration, it’s vital to ensure equipment safety at all times. BS EN 60601-2-12 gives the minimum requirements that should be met by every critical care ventilator or medical breathing apparatus. By following this standard, critical care units will have the right safety measures in place to protect vulnerable patients.

How does it work?

The first section of BS EN 60601-2-12 looks at the general requirements for performance tests, classification, identification as well as the marking of electrical medical equipment. The standard then defines the basic electrical safety categories and environmental conditions, before looking at how to protect people against electric shock hazards, mechanical hazards or excessive radiation. Other topics include protected electrical equipment, fire safety, alarm systems, safety devices and leak tests.

Who should buy it?

  • Intensive care units
  • Manufacturers of electrical medical equipment
  • Suppliers of medical breathing apparatus
  • Suppliers of medical electronic equipment and components
  • Health and safety professionals
  • Regulatory bodies
