What is BS 5724-2.15-Specification for capacitor discharge X-ray generators about?

BS 5724 is a British standard on medical electrical equipment that discusses the specification for capacitor discharge X-ray generators to ensure protection against electric shock hazards, mechanical hazards, and hazards from unwanted or excessive radiation.

BS 5724-2.15 is the fifteenth subpart of the second part of the BS 5724 series that applies to capacitor discharge X-ray generators operating in the intermittent mode for medical radiography, in which the electrical energy for loading the X-ray tube is completely or capacitively stored at and switched in the high-voltage circuit.

BS 5724-2.15 is confined to those devices which are medical electrical equipment and in which

  • The storage capacitor is in the high-voltage circuit and has a specified capacitance not exceeding 2 µF
  • The initial X-ray tube voltage is between 40 kV and 150 kV
  • An overcurrent protection, if provided, would not require a rating exceeding that which corresponds to an apparent power of 3 kVA
  • Loading the X-ray tube is controlled in the high-voltage circuit

BS 5724-2.15 does not exclude capacitor discharge X-ray generators that are capable of operation in continuous mode for direct radioscopy or indirect radioscopy. However, for this mode of operation, the device will have to comply with the relevant requirements for diagnostic high-voltage generators and diagnostic X-ray equipment.

The object of BS 5724-2.15 is to establish particular requirements to ensure safety and to specify methods for demonstrating compliance with those requirements.

Requirements for reproducibility and accuracy are given because of their relationship to the quality and quantity of the ionizing radiation produced and are confined to those considered necessary for safety.

Note1: The safety philosophy on which BS 5724-2.15 is based is described in the introduction to the general Standard.

Note2: With respect to protection against ionizing radiation, BS 5724-2.15 deals with indirect aspects of safety, namely those that depend upon the supply and control of electric energy from the capacitor discharge high-voltage generators. Direct requirements for protection against ionizing radiation are given in the collateral Standard.

Who is BS 5724-2.15-Specification for capacitor discharge X-ray generators for?

BS 5724-2.15 on the specification for capacitor discharge X-ray generators is useful for:

  • Capacitor discharge X-ray generators manufacturers
  • Capacitor discharge X-ray generators test personnel
  • Occupational health and safety departments
  • Quality assurance departments

Why should you use BS 5724-2.15-Specification for capacitor discharge X-ray generators?

The x-ray generator delivers the electrical power to energize the x-ray tube and permits the selection of x-ray energy, x-ray quantity, and exposure time. and dissipation rates specific to a generator and x-ray tube target and housing. Capacitor discharge X-ray generators use a high-voltage capacitor to store the charge and when exposure is done discharging of capacitor occurs.

BS 5724-2.15 provides you with guidance on general requirements for tests, classification, identification, marking and documents, safety requirements, protection against electric shock hazards, protection against mechanical hazards, protection against hazards from unwanted or excessive radiation, protection against hazards of explosions in medically used rooms, etc.

The general and safety requirements provided by BS 5724-2.15 assist you in improving the performance and quality of the capacitor discharge X-ray generators, enhancing safety, improving human working conditions, and counteracting adverse effects on human health and performance.

With obedience and compliance to BS 5724-2.15, you can enhance capacitor discharge X-ray generators’ effectiveness and efficacy and manufacture a standardized high-quality product.
