What is BS ISO 14093 - Climate resilience grants about?

Climate change impacts affect subnational authorities and local communities the most, especially in the Global South. It follows that these authorities are best positioned to identify the climate change adaptations and responses that will meet local needs. With that in mind, BS ISO 14093:2022 establishes a country-based mechanism to channel climate finance to subnational authorities to support climate change adaptation and increase local resilience.

Who is BS ISO 14093 - Climate resilience grants for?

  • National and local authorities
  • Donors, companies, financial institutions and international organizations involved in implementing a country-based mechanism for channelling climate finance to subnational authorities to support climate change adaptation and resilience

What does BS ISO 14093 - Climate resilience grants cover?

BS ISO 14093 establishes an approach and methodology for a country-based mechanism to channel climate finance to subnational authorities in support of climate change adaptation and increased local resilience. This contributes to the achievement of the goals of the 2015 Paris Agreement of the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) and the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

The standard is developed based on the United Nations Capital Development Fund’s (UNCDF) Local Climate Adaptive Living (LoCAL) mechanism, which aims to address the budgetary and capacity building challenges faced by sub-national authorities in their contributions to adaptation.

The country-based mechanism uses performance-based climate resilience grants (PBCRGs) which ensure programming and verification of climate change expenditures at the local level, offering strong incentives for performance improvements in enhanced resilience.

BS ISO 14093 provides requirements and guidelines.
