What is BS EN 13130-3-Determination of acrylonitrile in food and food simulants about?
BS EN 13130 is a European standard on materials and articles in contact with foodstuffs that discusses the acrylonitrile in food and food simulants to ensure food stimulants are safe for consumption.
BS EN 13130-3 is the third part of the BS EN 13130 series that specifies a method for the determination of acrylonitrile monomer in foods and food simulants.
The method under BS EN 13130-3 is applicable to aqueous food simulants, to the fatty food simulant olive oil and other fatty food simulants, simulants D, e.g., a mixture of synthetic triglycerides or sunflower oil or corn oil, as well as to liquid and solid foodstuffs such as beverages and soft margarine. The level of acrylonitrile monomer determined is expressed as milligrams of acrylonitrile per kilogram of food or food simulant.
The method described in BS EN 13130-3 should be used in conjunction with BS EN 13130-1 which describes the procedures required prior to the determination of acrylonitrile.
The method under BS EN 13130-3 has been validated by a collaborative trial using fruit juice, wine, and sunflower oil.
The method under BS EN 13130-3 is appropriate for the quantitative determination of acrylonitrile monomer at minimum levels of down to 0,01 mg/kg to 0,005 mg/kg, or lower, in food simulant, depending on the applied test conditions. Regarding the performance in the mentioned foodstuffs, in general, a direct detection limit of 0,02 mg/kg is achievable.
Note: The method under BS EN 13130-3 was developed for the determination of terephthalic acid in 15 % (v/v) aqueous ethanol, as required by the regulations in force at the time the development work was carried out. However, the method under BS EN 13130-3, developed for 15 (v/v) aqueous ethanol, should be applicable to the determination in 10 (v/v) aqueous ethanol.
Who is BS EN 13130-3-Determination of acrylonitrile in food and food simulants for?
BS EN 13130-3 on the determination of acrylonitrile in food and food simulants is useful for:
- Food stimulants manufacturers
- Food scientists
- Food technologists
- Food laboratories
- Food health and safety departments
Why should you use BS EN 13130-3-Determination of acrylonitrile in food and food simulants?
Acrylonitrile, CH2=CH-CN, is a monomer used in the manufacture of certain plastics materials and articles intended to encounter foodstuffs. During the manufacture of acrylonitrile copolymers, residual acrylonitrile monomer can remain in the polymer and can migrate into food encountering the polymer.
BS EN 13130-3 provides you with guidance on the apparatus, samples, procedure for GC preparation, the performance of GC measurements, expression of results, method of calculation, precision data and detection limit, confirmation, test report, etc.
The test methods and procedures provided by BS EN 13130-3 assist you in the determination of acrylonitrile in food and food simulants, improving the quality and subsistence of food and food stimulants and ensuring a reduction in the risk to human health due to consumption of terephthalic acid content.
With obedience and compliance to BS EN 13130-3, you can enhance food and food simulants’ effectiveness and efficacy.
