What is BS EN 13130-4-Determination of 1,3-butadiene in plastics in contact with foodstuffs about?

BS EN 13130 is a European standard on materials and articles in contact with foodstuffs that discusses the determination of 1,3-butadiene in plastics in contact with foodstuffs to ensure food stimulants are safe for consumption.

BS EN 13130-4 is the fourth part of the BS EN 13130 series that specifies a method for the determination of butadiene monomer in polymers.

The method under BS EN 13130-4 is applicable to acrylonitrile-butadiene-styrene copolymer (ABS) and to high-impact polystyrene (HIPS) as well as to other 1,3-butadiene polymers and copolymers where these are soluble in N, Ndimethylacetamide or finely dispersed, swollen suspensions in N, N-dimethylacetamide. The level of 1,3- butadiene monomer determined is expressed as milligrams of 1,3-butadiene per kilogram of polymer.

The method under BS EN 13130-4 is appropriate for the quantitative determination of 1,3-butadiene at a level of 0,1 mg/kg in the polymer.

The method described in BS EN 13130-4 is to be used in conjunction with BS EN 13130-1, which describes the procedure required prior to determination of 1,3-butadiene. The method has been validated by a collaborative trial using acrylonitrile-butadiene-styrene copolymer (ABS).

Who is BS EN 13130-4-Determination of 1,3-butadiene in plastics in contact with foodstuffs for?

BS EN 13130-4 on the determination of 1,3-butadiene in plastics in contact with foodstuffs is useful for:

  • Food products manufacturers
  • Food scientists
  • Food technologists
  • Food laboratories
  • Food health and safety departments

Why should you use BS EN 13130-4-Determination of 1,3-butadiene in plastics in contact with foodstuffs

1,3-Butadiene, CH2=CH-CH=CH2, is a monomer used in the manufacture of certain plastics materials and articles intended to encounter foodstuffs. During the manufacture of 1,3-butadiene copolymers, the residual 1,3-butadiene monomer can remain in the polymer and can migrate into food encountering the polymer.

BS EN 13130-4 provides you with guidance on the apparatus, samples, sample preparation for gas chromatography, the procedure for GC preparation, the performance of GC measurements, expression of results, method of calculation, determination of the 1,3-butadiene concentration in the polymer, confirmation, test report, etc.

The test methods and procedures provided by BS EN 13130-4 assist you in the determination of 1,3-butadiene in plastics in contact with foodstuffs, improving the quality and subsistence of foodstuffs and ensuring a reduction in the risk to human health due to consumption of 1,3-butadiene content in plastics in contact with foodstuffs.

With obedience and compliance to BS EN 13130-4, you can enhance foodstuffs’ effectiveness and efficacy.
