What is BS EN 62940 - Integrated communication system about?

BS EN 62940 is a European standard on Maritime navigation and radiocommunication equipment and systems that discusses the required test methods for testing integrated communication systems. BS EN 62940 specifies the minimum operational and performance requirements, technical characteristics and methods of testing, and required test results, for shipborne integrated communication systems (ICS) designed to perform ship external communication and distress and safety communications (GMDSS) and the functions of onboard routing of this communication. It takes account of IMO Resolution A.694(17) and is associated with IEC 60945. When a requirement in BS EN 62940 is different from IEC 60945, the requirement in BS EN 62940 takes precedence.

Who is BS EN 62940 - Integrated communication system for?

BS EN 62940 on maritime navigation and radiocommunication is relevant to:

  • Maritime manufacturers
  • Maritime navigation and radiocommunication systems engineer
  • Design engineers for marine navigation

Why should you use BS EN 62940 - Integrated communication system?

The ICS is a system in which individual radiocommunication equipment and installations are

used as subsystems, i.e. without the need for their control units, providing outputs to and

accepting inputs from a communications human-machine interface (COM-HMI). Each subsystem complies with the type approval requirements for that subsystem where applicable and complies with the interface requirements in BS EN 62940. An ICS consists of at least two individual GMDSS subsystems.

BS EN 62940 navigates you through the methods of testing and required test results, test site, functional requirements, operational requirements of ICS, COM-HMI, optional common storage media for electronic printing, software, and firmware maintenance, technical requirements, ICS alert management, interfacing.

As a user of BS EN 62940, you can provide position, identification, and other information about the ship to other ships and coastal authorities automatically. BS EN 62940  supplies tried and tested methods that will help you achieve operational and performance requirements for shipborne integrated communication systems (ICS). BS EN 62940 you can be ensured of characteristics and methods of testing, and required test results, for shipborne integrated communication systems (ICS).
