What is BS 7872 – Services for cash and valuables in transit about? 


Cash or valuables-in-transit (CVIT) is the physical transfer of banknotes, coins, credit cards and items of value from one location to another. To reduce the number of attacks on CVIT, a shared intelligence service was created called SaferCash. BS 7872 supports SaferCash by capturing and disseminating current good practice in the sector.

BS 7872 gives recommendations for the organization, staffing, operation, and management of companies providing a Cash and Valuables-in-Transit (CVIT) service (collection and delivery) on a contractual basis. Themes and topics include:

  •  CVIT company organization;
  • operations;
  • equipment;
  • employees;
  •  training and performance monitoring;
  • vehicles;
  • secure premises;
  • control rooms; and
  • vaults.

What has changed?


BS 7872:2025 supersedes BS EN 7872:2011. The revision reflects modern practice and technology, changes to control room and alarm system standards, and new risk threats. Specifically, the revisions are intended to:

  1. meet current practices;
  2. align with BS 10800 and BS 7858;
  3. reflect legislative changes;
  4. expand risk assessment; and 
  5. consider vulnerability of staff to terrorism, organized crime and lone wolf attacks.
