What is BS IEC 60404-8-5 about?

BS IEC 60404-8-5 defines the grades of electrical steel strips and sheets with specified mechanical properties and magnetic polarization. In particular, it gives general requirements, mechanical properties, magnetic polarization, geometric characteristics, tolerances, and technological characteristics, as well as inspection procedures.

BS IEC 60404-8-5 applies to electrical steel strips and sheets intended for the construction of poles and rims of rotating electrical machines.

Who is BS IEC 60404-8-5 for?

BS IEC 60404-8-5 on magnetic materials applied for the following:

  • Manufacturers and suppliers of electrical steel strips and sheets
  • Manufacturers of rotating electrical machines
  • Mechanical engineers
  • Fabricators
  • Welders

Why should you use BS IEC 60404-8-5?

Steel displays ferromagnetic properties as it is derived from iron.

BS IEC 60404-8-5 groups the steel grades into two classes according to their manufacturing process:

  • Hot-rolled grades
  • Cold-rolled grades

As a manufacturer, compliance with BS IEC 60404-8-5 can ensure that critical properties such as low core losses, high flux density and permeabilities are retained so as to meet the specific needs of the applications.

Best industry guidance on magnetic properties of steel as per BS IEC 60404-8-5 can be beneficial in making the right selection of materials used for efficient energy generation, transmission and consumption.

What’s changed since the last update?

BS IEC 60404-8-5:2020 cancels and replaces the first edition published in 1989.  The main changes compared to the previous edition are as follows

  • Extension of the range of products to include the improved grades
  • Division of "flatness" into "edge wave (wave factor)" and "residual curvature" inconsistent with IEC 60404-9
  • Change length of test specimen for determinations of geometrical characters from 2 m to1 m
