What is BS EN IEC 60404-7 about?  

BS EN IEC 60404-7 is the seventh part of a multi-series of documents that specifies a method of measurement of the coercivity of magnetic materials in an open magnetic circuit. 

BS EN IEC 60404-7 is applicable to all magnetic materials with coercivities from 0,2 A/m to 160 kA/m. 

Note: Examples of magnetic materials covered by this BS EN IEC 60404-7 are amorphous alloys, nanocrystalline alloys, all Soft magnetic crystalline materials (soft ferrites, hard metals, semi-hard magnetic alloys.

Why should you use BS EN IEC 60404-7?  

Magnetic circuits are employed to efficiently channel magnetic fields in many applications such as electric motors, generators, and transformers. Meanwhile, coercivity is the value of the coercive field strength in a material when the magnetic flux density, magnetic polarization or magnetization is brought from saturation by a monotonically changing magnetic field, to zero. 

BS EN IEC 60404-7 is thus useful in assessing the magnetic strength of materials while evaluating the extent of resistance to external magnetic fields, without becoming demagnetised.

What’s changed since the last update? 

BS EN IEC 60404-7:2020 supersedes BS EN 10330:2015, which is withdrawn. Some the changes are: 

  • Circuit diagram for methods A and B were simplified and the fluxgate probes inside the solenoid have been added 
  • Compensation for the earth’s magnetic field and for static and dynamic magnetic noise fields has been added 
  • Magnetic shielding of the measuring region has been added
