What is BS EN 1804-1 about?
BS EN 1804-1 is the first part of the BS EN 1804 series of the standards which stipulates the safety requirements for the use of support units intended by the manufacturer. Examples of support units are: frame supports, chock supports, shield supports, paired frames, and push-pull support systems including the components of advancing and anchoring devices that provide support functions. BS EN 1804-1 applies for support units that are used at ambient temperatures between −10 °C and 60 °C. BS EN 1804-1 also applies to support components and support accessories which are provided if the support unit is fitted with stowing equipment.
BS EN 1804-1 identifies and takes account of:
- The hazards that can possibly be induced through the operation of the support units
- The hazardous areas and the operating conditions that can cause any type of hazard
- The situations that can result in hazards that cause an injury or impair health
- Dangers that can be caused through mine gas and/or flammable dust
BS EN 1804-1 describes methods for reducing these hazards.
Note1: BS EN 1804-1 excludes fixing elements on the conveyor, coal-winning
equipment, power set legs and rams, valves, hydraulic and electro-hydraulic control units, lighting and signaling facilities, and other ancillary equipment.
Note 2: BS EN 1804-1 does not specify any additional requirements for:
- A particularly corrosive environment
- Risks associated with manufacturing, transport, and decommissioning
- Earthquake
Note 3: BS EN 1804-1 is not applicable to all support units manufactured before the date of its publication.
Who is BS EN 1804-1 for?
BS EN 1804-1 on safety requirements for hydraulic-powered roof supports is beneficial for:
- Machine manufacturers (small, medium and large enterprises)
- Health and safety bodies (regulators, accident prevention organizations, market surveillance, etc.)
- Maritime industries
- Manufacturer of hydraulic-powered roof support
- System engineers
Why should you use BS EN 1804-1?
The machinery concerned and the extent to which hazards, hazardous situations, and hazardous events are covered, are indicated in BS EN 1804-1.
BS EN 1804-1 assist the user with the use of support unit, frame support, chock support, shield support, paired frame, push-pull support, and support components.
BS EN 1804-1 provides user’s information and safety requirements while usage of hydraulic-powered roof support ensures the safety of the users.
BS EN 1804-1:2020 supersedes EN 1804-1:2001+A1:2010.
The main differences between BS EN 1804-1:2020 and EN 1804-1:2001+A1:2010 are as follows:
- Normative references (updated)
- List of significant hazards (revised)
- Requirements for prop anchorages (deleted)
- Requirements for steel for welded components (updated/modified)
- List of tests for confirmation (updated)
