What is BS 4185-1 – Locknuts about?
A locknut is a type of threaded fastener that possesses locking capabilities either by itself or in concert with another component. By design, lock nuts are engineered to resist loosening when subjected to vibration or torque.
BS 4185-1 is based on proposals made by the Machine Tool Trades Association and is one of a series dealing with components of machine tools. The locknuts specified in BS 4185-1 are those secured by a socket set screw. BS 4185-1 includes marking requirements so that a standard locknut may be distinguished from a special and its size readily identified.
BS 4185-1 relates to separate millimetre and inch series of locknuts, “C” type, socket set screw locking, for use on machine tools and their auxiliary equipment. The millimetre series is suitable for threaded components of diameter 10–125 mm and the inch series for threaded components of diameter 1/2–5 in.
Note: Double locknuts and lock washers are not included in BS 4185-1.
Who is BS 4185-1 – Locknuts for?
BS 4185-1 on locknuts is useful for:
- Manufacturers of fasteners
- Organizations that design, build and maintain fasteners
- Machine tool designers
- Mechanical engineers
- Industries that use locknuts

Why should you use BS 4185-1 - Locknuts?
Locking nuts or lock nuts are special types of fasteners are designed to achieve a secure fixing. BS 4185-1 provides you with constructional requirements and the material required to manufacture locknuts. As a manufacturer, BS 4185-1 you can manufacture premium quality and seamless finish locknuts for industrial applications.
BS 4185-1 covers all the requirements, dimensions and tolerance specifications related to the Locknuts (“C” type, socket set screw locking). Following the specifications provided in BS 4185-1, you will be able to safely use the locknuts.
BS 4185-1 gives the number of the hook spanner blank appropriate to each size of locknut; a hook spanner made from this blank to dimensions given in BS 2090 is suitable for that locknut, whether it is in the millimetre series or the inch.
