What is BS 4185-2 – Collars for machine tool applications about?
The shaft collar is a straightforward machine component used in many different power transmission applications. They are made up of a round metal or plastic ring with a clamp screw or multiple screws. Tightening the screws makes the ring tighten or loosen around the shaft.
BS 4185-2 is based on proposals made by the Machine Tool Trades Association and is one of a series dealing with components of machine tools. BS 4185-2 provides for the collar to be locked by a hexagon socket set screw and for a pilot hole to be drilled with a view to it being additionally locked, at the discretion of the user, by a parallel pin, a taper pin or a second hexagon socket set screw. The size of an appropriate taper pin is given for guidance only.
BS 4185-2 relates to the separate millimetre and inch series of collars for use in machine tools and their auxiliary equipment. The millimetre series is suitable for shafts 6–100 mm in diameter and the inch series for shafts 1/4–4 in diameter.
Who is BS 4185-2 – Collars for machine tool applications for?
BS 4185-2 on collars for machine tool applications is useful for:
- Manufacturers of Collars
- Organizations that design, build and maintain fasteners
- Machine tool designers
- Mechanical engineers
- Industries that use collars
- Research and development team
- Inspection bodies
- Quality control personnel
Why should you use BS 4185-2 – Collars for machine tool applications?
Collars serve important mechanical functions in transmission applications. They act as mechanical stops, locating components and load-bearing surfaces. As with many mechanical components, there are various types available. They are used in many industries including auto, medical, packaging, food and beverage, and many others.
BS 4185-2 covers all the requirements, dimensions and tolerance specifications related to the collars. Following the specifications provided in BS 4185-2, you will be able to safely use the collars.
BS 4185-2 includes marking requirements so that a standard collar may be distinguished from a special and its size readily identified. BS 4185-2 helps to establish the quality and reliability of collars throughout the machine tool applications.
